Winter Crisis: Demand for Food Support Skyrockets by 61%
Winter Crisis: Demand for Food Support Skyrockets by 61%
The ‘local reality’ in Luton is one of rapidly escalating need. In November, Luton Foodbank distributed 2,684 parcels a staggering 61% increase from the 1,663 parcels handed out in October. This surge provided vital support to 1,840 adults and 844 children, nearly double the number of families helped just one month prior. As winter sets in, these figures highlight the mounting pressure on our community as households struggle to balance the rising cost of living with the basic necessity of food.
While the UK Government’s new Child Poverty Strategy (published 5th December) aims to lift 550,000 children out of relative poverty by 2030, the immediate reality remains a struggle. National data indicates a food parcel is distributed every 10 seconds across the UK this winter. Locally, families in Luton must wait until April for benefit changes to take effect. Our mission remains urgent to bridge this “waiting gap”.
Luton is currently ranked as the 60th most deprived local authority in England. New data shows that 8.9% of Luton households are living in destitution, and 50.1% are living below the financial quality of lifeline. With 14% of our neighbourhoods classified as highly deprived well above the 10% national average your support is the only thing standing between local families and a winter of hunger.
Award-Winning Impact: Luton Smiles wins Project of the Year!
We are absolutely delighted to announce that our Luton Smiles Project has won Project of the Year at the Love Luton Best Awards! This incredible achievement was made possible through the partnership of Luton Point, Chiltern Academy, Aspens Services Ltd, and Chiltern Learning Trust.
The project also gained national recognition as a finalist for the prestigious Community Initiative of the Year at the Revo Awards, standing out from a highly competitive field of 65 entries. These accolades celebrate the heart and innovation that go into ensuring every child in our community feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
Luton Smiles: Community Fundraising Success
This year, the Luton Smiles initiative delivered true festive magic across our town. This wasn’t just about the £6,000 raised by Luton Point and other local businesses, or the over 2,000 toys collected—it was about ensuring every child in our community felt celebrated.
In addition to the toys, Aspens Services Ltd worked tirelessly to provide 1,000 cooked Christmas meals to 15 local schools from Chiltern Academy. We are incredibly proud to have worked alongside Level Trust and Kids in Action to facilitate these gifts. We also extend a special thanks to Luton Town Football Club for donating boots to the young athletes at Luton Allstars FC, as well as Mary Seacole Housing Association and Greenbridge Community for their support in reaching families.

The Reality of the “Christmas Gap”: A Mother’s Story
For one Luton mother we’ll call “Maya,” December was a month of impossible choices. Despite working as a teaching assistant, the “Waiting Gap”—the period before the removal of the two-child cap in April—meant she was effectively living in destitution.
Maya came to us not wanting a handout, but a way to provide for her children with dignity. We connected her to the Luton Smiles project, which ensured her children received two of the over 2,000 toys collected by our community. Simultaneously, she joined our Food Club, where her £5 membership allowed her to select the food items she needed for her family. Through the HAF programme, her children also received Hygiene Packs and Ride Tokens, turning a month of anxiety into one of genuine magic.
“I was ready to tell my kids Christmas wasn’t happening this year. Instead, because of the Foodbank and the Smiles project, they felt like the luckiest kids in town. You didn’t just give us food; you gave me my pride back.”
Inspire FM Winter Appeal in partnership with Crisis Aid: Choosing Between Heating and Eating
For many families in Luton, winter isn’t a season of “magic”—it is a season of impossible choices. As temperatures drop, the choice becomes stark: Do I turn on the heating, or do I put food on the table? No one in our community should have to sit in a freezing home just to avoid an empty stomach.
Thanks to your incredible heart, we have officially surpassed our £10,000 target! With the £10,000 match-funding from Crisis Aid, our total will exceed £20,000. This ensures that those facing the “heat or eat” crisis have a place to turn.

Community Champions: Storm Gym UK & Luton Grappling Club
We are incredibly moved by the local clubs taking action this month. Amir Subasic’s Storm Gym UK Mini Troopers completed a gruelling 12k run on the 6th of December to raise money for Luton Foodbank, successfully raising over £1000 to help us fight hunger. We also extend a huge thank you to Luton Grappling Club, who generously donated £400 to support our winter operations. Your sweat and dedication are helping us keep Luton fed!
Leading the Way: Tackling Fuel and Food Poverty
Luton Foodbank recently joined Utilita Giving for their ‘One Year On’ event. Our CEO, Salma Khan, shared the stage with Helen Greig (Trust Impact) and David James MBE to discuss the success of the ‘One Call That’s All’ approach. This collaborative, place-based strategy is crucial for delivering lasting change and providing people with the dignity they deserve.
