Luton Foodbank Newsletter: August 2026

Newsletter cover August 2026 1400x795 1

Hello to all our wonderful supporters!

As summer draws to a close and the new school term approaches, we wanted to share what's been happening at Luton Foodbank — and give you a first look at what's coming this autumn.

National Landscape & Local Reality: A New Wave of Pressures

Nationally, the picture is starting to shift, but the scale of need remains stark. Around 4.5 million children across the UK are still living in poverty — nearly 1 in 3.

The good news: the two-child benefit limit was officially abolished from 6 April 2026, a change expected to lift up to 450,000 children out of poverty.

Food banks nationally continue to see families bear the brunt of the crisis, with households with children still receiving the majority of emergency food parcels distributed each year.

What This Means for Luton

Locally, there are real signs of progress. Luton Council has welcomed the end of the two-child benefit cap, estimating that over 1,700 local families — more than 6,000 children — will benefit, worth up to £9.2 million flowing back into household budgets across the town each year.

Since the launch of the Luton 2040 vision, around 5,000 people have moved out of destitution, with the proportion of households in destitution falling from 12.1% to 9.9%.

But the challenge is far from over. Luton still has 17 neighbourhoods ranked among the most deprived 10% in the country, and around 39.5% of children in the town were living in poverty as of the latest figures — an improvement on previous years, but still meaning nearly 2 in 5 local children.

As the school summer holidays draw to a close, many local families are bracing for the return of uniform costs, school trips, and rising autumn bills — on top of already stretched budgets. We’ve continued to see high demand at our distribution points throughout August.

Welcoming Our New Operations Team

We’re delighted to introduce Anita Paymaster and Syed Murtaza, who have joined Luton Foodbank as our new job-share Operations Managers, each working 2.5 days a week.

Anita and Syed will be working closely with our whole team — from the warehouse to distribution to our advisors — to help keep everything running smoothly as we head into a busy autumn. Please join us in giving them a warm Luton Foodbank welcome

Harvest 2026: Save the Date

Harvest season is one of our biggest community moments of the year, and we’re already getting ready.

This year, Harvest runs from Monday 21st September to Friday 16th October. Each year, local schools and churches across Luton come together to collect essential items on our behalf. Last year, 43 schools and 18 churches took part, donating over 25,000 items between them.

If your school, church, or community group would like to get involved this year, get in touch — we’d love to have you on board. Read more

Going the Distance: Our 2027 London Marathon Runners

We’re thrilled to announce that Helen and Kevin will be lacing up to run the TCS London Marathon 2027 on behalf of Luton Foodbank. It’s a huge challenge, and every mile they run will help us continue supporting families across Luton.

If you’d like to cheer them on and help them smash their fundraising targets, you can sponsor them here:

Every donation, big or small, goes directly towards putting food on the table for local families.

Good luck, Helen and Kevin — we’re all behind you!

Thank You: Pakistan & Kashmir Culture Festival

Pakistan Event August 2026

A huge thank you to Next Generation Scheme for choosing Luton Foodbank as a beneficiary of their Pakistan and Kashmir Culture Festival, which raised over £1,500 for local families facing food poverty.

It’s this kind of community spirit that keeps us going — thank you to everyone at Next Generation Scheme and everyone who came along and gave so generously.

International Day of Charity: Become Our Charity Partner for the Year

5th September marks the United Nations’ International Day of Charity, and it’s the perfect moment for local businesses to think about who they want to stand behind for the year ahead. We’d love that to be us!

Becoming Luton Foodbank’s charity partner is a chance to make a real, lasting difference to families across the town — while giving your team a shared cause to rally around. Partners get involved in ways that suit them, from staff fundraising and volunteering days to sponsoring one of our flagship events like the Colour Run or Harvest, with recognition across our newsletter, social media, and events throughout the year.

If your business is looking for a charity partner this year, we’d love to talk. Get in touch by emailing [email protected] — let’s have a conversation about what a partnership could look like.

Beyond Emergency Support

Luton Food Club

Our Food Club isn’t just about subsidised groceries — it’s a structured route towards independence.

Members receive six visits, aligned with our six Essential Skills workshops, with time built in alongside an advisor at each visit, to help sort out benefits or employment.

The goal is simple: helping people integrate back into society without long-term dependency on food support.

Case Study: Aaron’s Story

For many of the people we support, the journey goes far beyond a single food parcel. This is Aaron’s story (name changed to protect his identity).

Aaron is a young man in his twenties from an African background, referred to us while living in Home Office supported accommodation after a period of homelessness. As a refugee with no recourse to public funds and no right to work, he was reliant on an ASPEN card and support from the Home Office and Luton Council. He spoke very limited English and was quiet and reserved — our team used translation tools to understand his needs and make sure he felt heard.

Alongside emergency food support, staff encouraged Aaron to enrol in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes and helped him register. He went on to attend Barnfield College regularly, and with the help of a bicycle to get to and from classes, his confidence and independence grew steadily over time.

Before being relocated by the Home Office, Aaron returned to one of our distribution sessions — not for food, but simply to thank the staff who had supported him.

“Thank you for everything and for helping and listening to me.”

Building Crisis Resilience: Energy & Essential Skills

Our Essential Skills Workshops continue to run alongside the Food Club, covering budget cooking, energy saving, and practical tools for household resilience.

Back to School Reminder

With the new school term starting soon, we know this can be an expensive time for many families — uniforms, shoes, and equipment on top of everyday costs.

If you’re struggling, please don’t wait until things become critical. Contact us on 01582 725838 or [email protected], or visit our Get Food page for details on how to get a referral.

We’d also like to highlight the brilliant work of Level Trust, a fellow Luton charity dedicated to removing the barriers poverty brings to a child’s education. Their Uniform Exchange lets families swap outgrown uniform for free, pre-loved or new items — no cost, no means-testing — helping ease one of the biggest back-to-school pressures. They also provide shoe vouchers redeemable at Luton and Dunstable Shoe Zone stores for children in Reception to Year 11.

    • Where: Uniform Exchange, Frasers Plus (Gallery Level)
    • When: Monday–Thursday and Saturday, 10am–2pm
