The Critical Need: National Push, Local Reality

Luton Foodbank handed out 1,663 in October which represents an approximate 19% rise in demand, indicating a significant increase in the number of people needing food support. With the winter months approaching, demand is expected to remain high as households face additional pressures from rising living costs and colder weather. In October alone, these parcels helped 1,147 adults and 516 children, highlighting the scale of support provided to vulnerable families in the community.

In a major change, the UK Government has now committed to scrapping the two-child cap, a move expected to take effect from April next year.

This decision offers real hope. By removing the cap, the government anticipates lifting many children out of poverty and helping to prevent future hardship for countless families.

However, national policy change doesn’t automatically solve everything. Here in Luton, we know many families are facing severe financial pressure right now, struggling to put food on the table, worried about rising costs this winter, and unsure where support will come from day to day.

That’s why our local mission remains urgent and ongoing: to provide immediate food support and practical help to families in need. While the policy shift is a vital step forward, it will take time before its impact is fully felt and there are people in Luton who simply cannot wait.

Luton’s Deprivation Crisis: Why Your Support is Vital

New data confirms Luton is ranked as the 60th most deprived local authority out of 296 in England, a stark reality driven by universal poverty.

Crucially, 14% of neighbourhoods in Luton are classified as highly deprived, significantly higher than the England average of 10%. This means hundreds of local families live in areas where poverty is deeply concentrated, often forced to make the devastating choice between putting the heating on and eating as energy costs bite. These statistics are not abstract numbers; they represent the increasing number of working families, pensioners, and children coming through our doors, making your support for Luton Foodbank this winter vital.

Matt Finds Financial Footing and Independence

Matt (50s, Luton) was struggling on Universal Credit, unable to cover his essential bills after rent and council tax. This chronic financial pressure meant he was repeatedly relying on the Foodbank for groceries.

Our team conducted a Financial Entitlement Review, providing immediate and targeted advice on potential eligibility for Housing Benefit and a Council Tax Reduction. We provided sustained 1-to-1 support and signposted him to coordinators who helped with the complex online application forms.

Matt was successfully approved for both benefits, drastically reducing his outgoing costs. This change empowered him to regain control of his finances and independently meet his grocery needs without the need for further crisis support.

“I feel relieved now. I can finally afford my groceries.”

Staying Warm and Healthy: Winter Tips

As temperatures drop, the struggle to afford both food and energy becomes critical for many families. Here are some essential tips we are sharing with our clients to help them through the colder months:

  • Make Supermarket Choices: Focus on high-energy, non-perishable foods like oats, rice, lentils, and tinned goods.
  • Cooking on a Budget: Utilise slow cookers or microwave meals, which often use less energy than ovens.
  • Staying Warm: Use layers of clothing, close internal doors, and utilise hot water bottles and blankets before turning up the thermostat.
  • Energy Support: We continue to refer clients for tailored energy support and advice on grant applications.
