The Rising Need: September’s Impact in Numbers
The Trussell Trust, part of the wider food bank network, recently reported that 2.9 million emergency food parcels were distributed nationwide in the last year, with over 1 million going to children.
This national trend shows that emergency food provision is now two and a half times the level seen a decade ago, highlighting the constant and critical need for support right here in Luton.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we were able to distribute 1,395 food parcels in September. This represents an increase of approximately 22.6% since last month.
Public donations are vital at this time of year to help us meet the continuously growing demand.
Mary's Lifeline: Crisis to Hope
After a severe injury and the removal of her daughter into care, Mary, a mother in her forties, found herself isolated, struggling with mental health issues, and facing immense financial hardship in Luton. Her Universal Credit was cut, leaving her with four months of rent arrears and unable to afford food.
Mary reported feeling lost and hopeless, having reached out for help but not finding the urgent support she needed.
Referred to Luton Foodbank, Mary’s advisor recognised she needed more than just a food parcel. A coordinated plan was immediately put in place:
An urgent food delivery was arranged, and referrals were completed for tailored financial and energy support to tackle her rent arrears. The team liaised with community mental health services and confirmed her ongoing care, ensuring she was emotionally supported. Mary was provided with information on local advice sessions to maintain contact and reduce her isolation.
The holistic, rapid response eased Mary’s immediate financial and emotional pressures. With her food and energy needs met and multiple agencies now engaged, she is feeling a renewed sense of hope and is awaiting the stabilisation of her Universal Credit.
Mary’s story shows how crucial coordinated support is in empowering individuals to regain control of their lives.
“You do not know how much you have helped me… I am so grateful to you—the financial support will make a whole difference.”

It was inspiring to share our mission with future leaders.
