Volunteer Tim reveals what made him decide to join Luton Foodbank.

In March, I retired after being a fire officer for over 30 years. I enjoyed my free time, but still wanted to be active. Luton Foodbank is well known for helping the local community, so I decided to give my time volunteering there.

My usual shift is around two hours long, and I've met people from all backgrounds with the shared goal of making things easier for others. The work is straightforward, and involves picking items to create parcels for distribution. We unpack donations, and restock the shelves ready for the next volunteers. Sometimes I drive to collection points, such as Luton airport, or deliver parcels to our distribution centres.

Volunteering makes me feel I have had a positive impact on other people’s lives. Hopefully, I will be remembered as a helpful person in the community. When I told my family what I’m doing with my time, it inspired them to also volunteer.

If you are wondering how to use your spare time, I recommend volunteering with Luton Foodbank. You'll be a part of a supportive team, and gain sense of achievement knowing you’ve helped so many people.

If you would like to help others that are in difficult circumstances, volunteer your time.
